The USA Electric Grid is close to 100 years old. It served its purpose well for most of that time and helped the USA become the economic powerhouse that it is today. Unfortunately, the Grid today is obsolete, not reliable, too costly, environmentally irresponsible, and poses a risk to National Security. There are options to the Electric Grid. What we see today from our current political leadership is ‘more of the same’ introduced in current energy legislation. Legislation that was probably written with the help of current electricity providers to keep the status quo.
We find it somewhat URGENT to get this ball rolling. New electrical generation facilities, such as Nuclear, Wind and Solar need new or upgraded transmission lines to deliver the electricity produced vast distances. Transmission lines, substations and other distribution elements plus the generation facilities themselves, cost enormous amounts of money, all which need to be paid for in some manner. This manner is usually by you and me, the consumer! We advocate generating electricity at the point of use, by any number of technologies that currently exist. If you produce electricity at the source of use, no transmission lines need to be erected. No step down transformation from High Voltage to Standard Voltage needs to transpire. None of these added costs need to be paid for over long periods of time.
The removal of the grid will not happen overnight, or even within a few years. It will take time. Just a few of the items needed are: 1) Best practice alternate electrical generation systems to recommend, 2) Economic Research to help recover stranded costs of the current system, 3) Uniform Building Code updates to acomodate changing technology, 4) plus much more. We can do it and we need to start NOW.
